relayMarion County’s Annual Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, September 17, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., in Jasper on the Courthouse Square, right in the center of town. Chrissy Seals, event coordinator for the Chattanooga area, said, “As of now, there are 16 teams that have signed up to participate in the Marion County Relay, and $17,560 has been raised.” Seals said both the number of teams and the amount raised could change by September 17. All of the money raised goes to The American Cancer Society, who’s vision is a world free of cancer. They are there to help the people. Seals went on to say, “Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to help end cancer. It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, and remember loved ones lost.” All cancer survivors at the event will walk the first lap, the Survivor’s Lap, celebrating their victory over cancer. Other participants cheer on these survivors while they are traveling around the sidewalk of the courthouse, celebrating their accomplishment of surviving a battle with cancer. Booths will be set up on the two streets located inside the square. “A Luminaria Ceremony will take place at dark,” said Seals. The Luminaria bags are personalized bags sold for $10. These personalized bags have candles inside that are lit and placed around the sidewalk of the courthouse as glowing tributes to those who have been affected by cancer, past and present. Seals added there would be a fireworks show following the Luminaria Ceremony. If you have any questions, please contact Chrissy Seals by phone at (423) 499-2606 or email,
