On the morning of August 3 a multi agency investigation was brought to a close by the arrest of Edward Gawayne Taylor, Tevin Kordel Westmoreland and Eddie J. Henderson. These parties were charged with multiple counts of theft and burglary. The charges stem from a recent rash of vehicle burglaries in the cities of South Pittsburg, particularly around Contour Circle, Locust Avenue and 8th Street and Jasper centered around the Gamble Subdivision. The August 3 incident in Jasper would prove to be their undoing. According to Jasper PD Lt. Scott Evans, “In many ways were lucky in that we had some guys that were coming home off the night shift and were sitting in a driveway after work and witnessed on of the suspects try and open a door. They called it into dispatch and we rolled on it about 3:30 or 4:00 that morning. We ended up in a  short chase before they crashed and took off into the woods, but by daylight Marion County Sheriff’s Department had helped us round them up. I can’t thank the Sheriff’s Dept enough…the combined efforts really made for a quick resolution on that.”

One thing that all officers involved emphasized was to make sure the door were locked on your vehicle. Most, if not all, of the thefts were from vehicles that were left unlocked. Ultimately, the three would be booked on fifteen counts of theft under $500 as well as multiple related charges. Whereas there is evidence tying the trio to South Pittsburg thefts, those charges have not been lodged at press time, so it is expected several more charges will be added.

Marion County Sheriff Deputies and Jasper Police Officers were able to take the three suspects into custody without incident. Upon further investigation it was determined that the above parties were responsible for a string of vehicle burglaries that took place in the City of South Pittsburg on July 30 as covered in the August 3 South Pittsburg Hustler. Sheriff Burnett states, “This goes to show you how different law enforcement agencies in the county work together every day to fight crime. This was a team effort between the Marion County Sheriff Dept., Jasper Police Dept., and South Pittsburg Police Dept.” These parties are also believed to be connected to several vehicle burglaries in Hamilton County. All three suspects are still in custody at this time awaiting a bond hearing at press time.
